Roberto's Impact at Fulham FC
At Fulham FC, Roberto was invited to speak to the youth team and first-team scouts with assistant Ray Lewington during Roy Hodgson’s tenure. Roberto’s connection with Lewington began in 1998 when they met while Lewington was at Crystal Palace.
Youth team coach Vic Bettinelli, who had worked with Roberto at Crystal Palace, invited him to share insights with Fulham's youth team. Roberto provided the young players with a psychological view on the factors that set high-performing teams apart.
Head of Scouting, Barry Simmonds, also invited Roberto to address the scouting staff. He used the art of illusion to show how appearances can be misleading, urging scouts to be mindful when evaluating players. His message focused on avoiding biases and ignoring media hype, promoting open-minded and critical assessments.
Fittingly, Hodgson and Lewington’s partnership brought success again in 2024 at Crystal Palace, highlighting their enduring influence in football psychology.
