Roberto's journey with Charlton Athletic FC - 1997 - 2012
Roberto began his journey with Charlton Athletic in 1997, taking charge of the Youth Academy (then known as the School of Excellence). He coached the U14s and skillfully guided them to the U15 level. Under his leadership, promising players like Michael Turner, who later played in the Premier League, and Glenn Morris, who went on to have a solid career as a goalkeeper, started developing their talents.
Roberto's ability to connect with young athletes, build confidence, and instill a winning mentality set him apart. His sessions focused on sharpening mental resilience, emphasizing teamwork, and fostering a mindset of continuous growth—key factors in youth development.
Years later, as Charlton faced challenges under Alan Pardew’s management, the club asked Roberto to return. During Pardew’s final weeks, Roberto’s role was to reignite the team's spirit amidst a difficult period. His brief but impactful stint helped stabilize morale during a turbulent time.
The story didn’t end there. In the 2011/12 season, Charlton aimed for promotion to the Championship. Recognizing the psychological edge needed for this crucial campaign, manager Chris Powell invited Roberto back. This time, Roberto’s focus was on embedding a culture of psychological toughness and unity. He worked closely with players, emphasizing strategies to handle pressure, stay focused during high-stakes matches, and build belief in their abilities.
Charlton’s hard work paid off, as they secured promotion with an impressive 101 points. Roberto's influence was a vital part of their success, as he helped the squad develop a winning mentality that carried them through the season.
