If you’ve been feeling down, have low self-esteem or are feeling anxious or depressed, the chances are that you are unconsciously thinking in a certain way that is feeding your low mood In psychology we call these thoughts ‘thinking errors or ‘cognitive distortions’. Over the next few days, I will share some of these with you with a tip on how to deal with these thoughts,
Overgeneralising
Overgeneralising, it’s easy to take one particular event and generalise it to the rest of our life. When something goes wrong in the morning (e.g. you spill the milk) you tell yourself everything goes wrong or it’s going to be a bad day. If you failed to close one deal, you may decide, “I’m bad at closing deals.” Or if you are treated poorly by one family member, you might think, “Everyone in my family is rude.” Take notice of times when an incident may apply to only one specific situation, instead of all other areas of life.
Start compartmentalising these ‘poor moments’ into what they are…moments and specific to that incident. One incident does not reflect on everything else. One mistake or criticism is not a reflection of you as a person.
